I’ve been hearing a lot lately about Sol Spirit Farms, and I was wondering what all the talk was about. When I had the chance to review their cannabis, I decided I had to meet the people behind the weed. This review begins with a story, set in idyllic Trinity County, California, in a little town called Willow Creek. 

Judi grew up in Chicago, Walter, in LA. The cannabis scene was much different then, and legalization had not happened yet. Judi attended college and graduated with a degree in physical therapy. Walter was more of a free spirit, but they both followed the Grateful Dead all over the US. When they met, it was at a Jerry Garcia memorial in LA in 1995. The two decided to purchase an old school bus and converted it into a liveable space while they traveled the country. Their travels took them from Mexico and all over the continental US, but after a run-in with the law somewhere in Arkansas for glassware, they decided to head back to Arcata where the mindset around cannabis was more welcoming. Walter had a little glass blowing shop in town but eventually decided to focus solely on his plants. Judi still works as a physical therapist in private practice and Walter couldn’t be happier tending to his farm.

Judi and Walter have set up a beautiful regenerative farm tucked into the mountains, where they work with the terroir of the area to produce some of the county’s finest sun-grown cannabis. Sol Spirit Farms combines JADAM farming, no-til farming, and intentional rotational grazing practices in their methods. Along with practicing regenerative farming, Sol Spirit is Sun+Earth Certified as well as DEM Pure Certified. Walter takes care of the plants while Judi is in charge of the retreat side of the farm. Each year, the farm provides guests with “glamping” style tents, farm-to-table meals, and an education on regenerative farming methods. From the plants to the packaging, Sol spirit Farms is environmentally conscious about everything they do, from organic inputs and water conservation, to the packaging materials they use to bring their cannabis to market.

Sol Spirit Farm’s selection of cannabis offerings is plentiful, with eight different cultivars to choose from. I let my nose do the talking, and it led me to one of the most unique smells I have had the pleasure of sniffing! When I asked Judi what her favorites were, she agreed that this particular one was her favorite as well - Burmese Mimosa. That got me even more excited to try it out, so let’s dive in….

Appearance

This bud is very dark green with a few orange pistils peeking out occasionally. The trichome coverage is moderate and even throughout the bud structure, which is somewhere between loose and tight. When I start to break the buds apart, my fingers quickly get covered in resin, and the aroma begins to come out even more. I used my digital microscope to view the trichomes, and I was delighted to see most of them intact, and mostly amber heads mixed with quite a few clear ones.

Aroma

As I mentioned earlier, I love how this bud first smells when opening the jar. Fruit forward with a hint of spice, it stands out among the crowd. As I break open the buds to examine the inside, the smell of grapefruit hits me, along with hints of cinnamon and of tobacco. Lemon and pine follow, giving me a hint of what will happen if I smoke this. It is important to note the genetics of Burmese Mimosa, a cross between Rose Mimosa x Orange Burmese. If you like nerding out about weed like I do, this information is helpful and can be found on the farm’s website along with COAs and dominant terpene profiles.

Flavor
Before I light the joint, I take a “dry hit.” Doing this gives me a lot of the flavors without the combustion, which can degrade the most delicate terpenes. The strong taste of pine needles and citrus greets me, giving me a jolt of energy! Upon combustion there is definitely a hint of floral notes, and the tobacco flavor lingers on the palate a bit after the other flavors fade.

Experience
Without any cannabis in my system, I ate a nice big meal at brunch, and saved this joint for afterwards. I was ready for a nap when I decided to light it up and see what happened. Well, I never got around to taking a nap. I instead made it half-way through and did laundry, cleaned house, and meal-prepped for the week!
